Story

Researched 9 Oct 2026, fact-checked.

The Bridge Creek Lookout Tower stands in Lawrence County, Alabama, and the Alabama Forestry Commission administers it.1,2 The National Historic Lookout Register describes it as a 100-foot Aermotor MC-39 steel tower that the commission erected in 1949.1 The Register also calls it the only steel fire tower in Lawrence.1

The Register puts the site at 840 feet (256 m) and records the tower's registration on December 7, 2009. Thomas Kaufmann nominated it.1

The MC-39 was the steel model most often used in Alabama, according to Kaufmann's December 2025 column.3 The tower's design is therefore typical for the state, even though its own history is thinly documented.

I could not find who staffed the tower, what fires it watched, or whether it has been changed since it went up. The Register includes a photo credited to Jason Johns and dated November 27, 2021, which suggests the tower was still standing then.1

Current access is unknown. Kaufmann's column also says many Alabama towers are very unsafe and off limits to climbers, so check with the Alabama Forestry Commission before going to the site.3
