Story
Researched 9 Oct 2026, fact-checked.
The Longleaf Lookout Tower stands in Butler County, Alabama, on the property of its owner, Jerry Watson, which the register calls Georgiana.1 The National Historic Lookout Register describes it as a 100-foot International Derrick model Huxford fire tower with a 7-by-7-foot cab, built in 1939.1
The register says the Alabama Forestry Commission declared the tower surplus in 2006. Watson then bought it, moved it and restored it.1 The register lists Watson as the owner and gives a registration date of December 18, 2009.1
A second record complicates the picture. The Former Fire Lookout Sites Register lists a Longleaf Fire Tower Site in Spring Hill, about 0.7 kilometers from the coordinates given for the moved tower.1,2 That entry says only the stands remain there.2 The two records do not say outright that the Spring Hill site is where the tower stood before it moved. That link is my inference from the matching name.
I found no account of who staffed the tower or which fires it watched.
Today the tower stands on private property.1 Neither record says whether the public may visit or climb it, and I found no public visiting arrangement.1,2 Anyone interested should ask the owner before going near the property.
