Story

Researched 8 Oct 2026, fact-checked.

Luverne Lookout stood in Crenshaw County, Alabama, and the Alabama Forestry Commission administered it.1,2 The Register says the commission built it in 1948 as a 100-foot MC-39 Aermotor with a 7-by-7-foot cab.1 It also says the tower was once the county's last fire tower.1

The sources disagree about when it came down. A Forest Lookouts page says that in March 2013 the tower was taken down and sent to New York, to be restored and set up somewhere new.3 The Register says it was removed before April 2019.1,2

The Register registered the tower on June 23, 2009, and the former-site listing followed on March 25, 2020.1,2 A photo on the former-site listing shows the tower's foundation in January 2024.2 Since the Register says the tower is gone, there is no standing tower to climb.1 The sources say nothing about who staffed it, what fires it watched, or whether the public may visit the site.
