Story

Researched 8 Oct 2026, fact-checked.

The Pioneer Tower stands in Pickens County, Alabama, and the Alabama Forestry Commission administers it.1 The National Historic Lookout Register lists it as US 899, AL 57 and gives its elevation as 134 feet (41 meters).1 A Forest Lookouts listing files it under the name Pleasant Grove.2

The Register tells a more tangled story about dates. It says the first Pioneer-Grove fire tower was destroyed by a tornado in 1947, and that a 100-foot Aermotor MC-39 with a 7-by-7-foot cab replaced it in 1966.1 Its own Built field, however, reads 1947.1 The description suggests the 1947 date belongs to the tower that was lost, but we found no second source to confirm the tornado or either date.

A 1819 News column by Thomas Kaufmann names the Aermotor MC-39 as the steel lookout design most often found in Alabama's forests.3 Kaufmann also nominated this tower to the Register, which accepted it on January 3, 2011.1

The sources we read say nothing about who staffed the Pioneer Tower, which fires it watched, or whether the public can visit or climb it today. Anyone planning a trip should check with the Alabama Forestry Commission first.
