Story

Researched 9 Oct 2026, fact-checked.

The Union Hill Lookout Tower was erected in 1964 on a high hill in eastern Morgan County, Alabama.1,2 A 1964 newspaper report, quoted on the Forest Lookouts page, called it the county's first and only fire tower and said it was made of steel.2 The register describes an Aermotor MC-39 steel tower with a 7-by-7-foot cab, one of a limited number of 80-foot towers in Alabama.1

Reports from spring 1964 tracked its progress. In March it was nearing completion; by April it was in operation, though not quite finished.2 A notice from July 1964 said the new tower had not yet been manned, because there were not enough funds or people to staff it.2 The sources read do not record any fire it spotted, or whether it was staffed in later years.

The register says the tower and its surrounding buildings were sold to a private owner in 2019, and that access now requires the landowner's permission.1 The Forest Lookouts page gives August 2019 as the month the site was deeded to private ownership, and it lists the Alabama Forestry Commission as the earlier administrator.2

The register's photographs were taken in November 2021, and the sources do not say what condition the tower is in now.1 Because the owner controls access, anyone curious about it should ask the landowner first.1
