Story
Researched 9 Oct 2026, fact-checked.
The Boat Mountain Lookout Tower is a 100-foot Aermotor tower with a diagonal staircase, six landings and seven flights, on a peak of 2,221 feet in Newton County, Arkansas.1 The register lists the administrator as AFC. The Forest Lookouts page names the Arkansas State Forestry Commission.1,2
Newspapers from 1936 tell most of the early story. In March, crews from Camp Harrison and Camp Jasper were finishing a road up the mountain, and a fire tower was going up at the top.1 By May the State Forestry Service had built a steel observation tower 100 feet high, and visitors were driving up the new road to see it.1 The register gives 1936 as the build year.1 The papers do not agree on the distance from Harrison. One April item puts the mountain about ten miles south of town, and an August item says about eight miles.1
By 1956 a couple was watching from the tower. The register quotes a Harrison paper reporting that Mr. and Mrs. Joe Russell of the Boat Mountain Forest Tower were recognized for taking part in the Ground Observer Corps, and that their aircraft watching did not get in the way of their fire watch.1,2 Across Arkansas, towers closed as more people used the forests, roads reached farther into them, and aerial surveillance reduced the need for lookouts.3 The state encyclopedia counts forty-eight towers still standing in 1994, but whether any were still in use is unknown.3
The register records a site visit on March 20, 2022, and it was registered that August.1 It does not say who owns the tower, whether the public may climb it, or what condition it is in now. We found no confirmed report of its condition after that visit, so treat access as unknown and do not climb a tower whose condition is unconfirmed.
