Story

Researched 8 Oct 2026, fact-checked.

The Register places Buffalo Tower in the Ozark National Forest in Newton County, Arkansas, and lists the U.S. Forest Service as its administrator.1,2 The Register says the Forest Service built it in the mid-1930s and gives 1935 as the build year.1 An Encyclopedia of Arkansas photo caption repeats that date but credits the Register, so it does not count as separate confirmation.3

The Register describes a 100-foot Aermotor tower with a metal cab.1,2 A 1971 survey station description places a survey mark at the center base of a lookout tower about 100 feet high.2,4 The two sources disagree on who wrote that 1971 description: the Forest Lookouts page credits the Forest Service, while the NOAA datasheet credits the National Geodetic Survey.2,4

The Register says the tower remained active until 1987.1 It does not say what that activity involved, and we found no record of who staffed the tower or what fires it watched.

The Register entry is dated July 27, 2006, with Michael A. Pfeiffer as nominator, under the number US 672, AR 9.1

The sources read say nothing about what became of the tower after 1987. The Register's description uses the present tense and places the tower on the Bayou/Buffalo Ranger District.1 We could not confirm its condition today or whether the public may climb it, so anyone planning a visit should check with the Forest Service first.
