Story
Researched 9 Oct 2026, fact-checked.
The earliest dated record I found for Hardy Lookout Tower is a survey note, not a construction date.1 A U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey description written in 1955 already describes a four-legged steel frame, about 130 feet high, carrying an observer's cabin on state-owned land roughly six and a half miles northeast of Hardy.1 The National Historic Lookout Register records the build date as unknown.2 Its description calls it a 100-foot Aermotor, not the survey's 130 feet.2 The Arkansas Forestry Commission, created in 1931, built many more towers of its own.3 The Civilian Conservation Corps built 3,100 towers during the Great Depression.3 The sources I read do not say which of these, if either, put up this one.
Staffing and fire history are not recorded in anything I could find. For context, the Encyclopedia of Arkansas says lookout watches were the main way to spot fires until the 1960s.3
Locals Wandering, in an article posted July 4, 2026, lists the tower as standing and as a Register lookout.4 The Register gives its registration date as August 14, 2022.2 The Encyclopedia counts Hardy among the fourteen Arkansas towers on the Register.3 Arkansas once had more than 120 fire towers, and the Encyclopedia counts 46 still standing by 2023.3
The sources do not say whether the public can reach the tower or go up it. The 1955 survey places it on state land, so ask the landowner before going, and never climb the steel frame without permission.1 The article notes that some towers are fenced for safety or preservation.4
