What you see from the cab: every ridge out to about 93 miles, the named peaks in sight, and other fire lookouts within view, worked out from terrain data in your browser.

Downloads about 2.9 MB of terrain data the first time.

Or see what it could see on the map: the ground in its line of sight.

Story

Researched 9 Oct 2026, fact-checked.

The National Historic Lookout Register calls this site the Ico Lookout Tower, and it added the tower to the Register on April 11, 2023.1 Central US Lookouts files a Grant County site under the name Cane Creek.2 I have treated the two names as one tower, though neither page says so outright.

No construction date is on record. The Register lists the build year as unknown.1 Its visitor calls the tower an Aermotor design and says it may stand on private property.1 The Encyclopedia of Arkansas notes that the most popular lookout type outside the West was built by the Aeromotor Company. These were steel towers with four legs.3

The Register says the Arkansas Forestry Commission administers the tower.1 The Commission was established by Act 234 in 1931.3

The sources I read do not say who watched the tower or what fires it spotted.

The Register's description is in the present tense and records a site visit dated 1/22/22, so the tower appeared to be standing then. I found no later check.1 The Register gives the site's elevation as 400 ft (122 m).1 Because the land may be private, confirm access with the Commission or the landowner before going, and do not climb it.
