Story
Researched 8 Oct 2026, fact-checked.
Deer Springs Lookout stands in Navajo County, Arizona, inside the Apache-Sitgreaves National Forest, and the U.S. Forest Service administers it.1 The register calls it the oldest active lookout in Arizona.1
The register says it was built in 1923. The lookout history site gives the same year and describes a 50-foot Aermotor LL-25 with a 7-by-7 cab.1,2 Earlier mentions complicate that date. A 1913 Holbrook News item, quoted by the history site, says a lookout tower had been constructed near Deer Spring, and a 1914 item mentions the tower again.2 Wikipedia gives the build year as 1923 or 1926.3
Wikipedia also dates the ladder replacement to the 1930s, without a specific year.3
The site has staffing records from the 1940s. In 1940 Ivan S. Williams was in his 20th consecutive year there, and in 1944 a teacher, Annis Jackson, was stationed at the tower that season.2 I found no staffing report after 1944.
The register added the tower on March 4, 2002, as US 418, AZ 25.1 Sources also disagree on its National Register listing. TreeAlive gives January 28, 1988, while Wikipedia gives December 14, 1987.4,3
The Forest Fire Lookout Association's Arizona list still shows the tower as standing.5 I found no current staffing report, rental listing or visitor information for it, so I cannot say whether the public may go up it. Ask the Apache-Sitgreaves National Forest before visiting, and do not climb the tower without permission.
