Story

Researched 8 Oct 2026, fact-checked.

Gentry Lookout is a 70-foot tower in the Apache-Sitgreaves National Forests, in Navajo County, Arizona, and the U.S. Forest Service administers it.1

The National Historic Lookout Register gives 1965 as the build year. The tower has a 14-by-14-foot CL-100 series metal cab with a catwalk, which the Register describes as a live-in cab.1 A Forest Service post repeats the 1965 date, the 70-foot height and the cab size.2

It replaced a 62-foot Aermotor tower that the Register dates to 1927.1 The Register recorded the lookout on September 2, 2009, as US 827, AZ 74.1

The Forest Service's Gentry Campground sits at the base of the tower. It offers five individual family sites, or the whole campground can be rented as one group site for up to 75 people.3 Recreation.gov says the campground shares its space with the tower and gives directions: take Forest Road 300 south for about four and a half miles, following signs to the tower.4

I found no source that names the people who staffed the tower or describes a fire it reported.

The Forest Fire Lookout Association's Arizona list shows the tower as standing.5 The Forest Service also warns visitors to stay away from the tower during lightning storms.3

None of these sources says whether the public may go up into the cab. Before planning any climb, check with the Black Mesa Ranger District, which the Register names as a cooperator. Do not climb a tower that is closed or private.1
