View from the cab

What you see from the cab: every ridge out to about 93 miles, the named peaks in sight, and other fire lookouts within view, worked out from terrain data in your browser.

Downloads about 3.1 MB of terrain data the first time.

Or see what it could see on the map: the ground in its line of sight.

Story

Researched 9 Oct 2026, fact-checked.

The Hilltop Lookout stands on the San Carlos Reservation in Gila County, Arizona.1 The Bureau of Indian Affairs built it in 1930.1 The National Historic Lookout Register calls it an early model L-4 with expanded catwalks, and places it within the fire management system of the San Carlos Agency.1

The sources I read name no staff, no fires and no later changes to the lookout.1,2 The Forest Fire Lookout Association lists its type as Ground and its status as Standing.2 It was added to the National Historic Lookout Register on April 1, 2005, as number US 632.1 The register gives its elevation as 6,606 feet.1

Today, the sources do not say whether the lookout is staffed or open to visitors, and I could not read a recent trip report. Ask the reservation before you go, and do not enter a structure that is closed or private.
