Story
Researched 9 Oct 2026, fact-checked.
Limestone Lookout stands on the Fort Apache Indian Reservation in Navajo County, and the White Mountain Apache Agency administers it.1 The National Historic Lookout Register says it was built in 1936 as a 123-foot Aermotor tower with a 7-by-7-foot metal cab.1 The register also calls it the tallest fire tower in Arizona. I could not check that ranking against a second source, so treat it as the register's claim.1
According to the register, the lookout remains active, and the same site also serves as a helitack crew base.1 The Forest Fire Lookout Association's Arizona list still shows the tower as standing.2
The register entry is dated February 18, 1997.1 A West Lookouts history page records that an October 2016 investigation into reported vandalism and looting at a lookout tower found the property to be Limestone, and that the Bureau of Indian Affairs would decide what action to take.3 I found no later report of that decision.
Limestone is on tribal land, and I found no public visiting information for it.1 Anyone curious about a visit should ask the White Mountain Apache Tribe before going, and should not treat the tower as open to climb.
