Story

Researched 8 Oct 2026, fact-checked.

West Peak Lookout stands on the Coronado National Forest in Graham County, Arizona, near the community of Bonita, at 8,628 feet.1,2 The register names the Safford Ranger District as a cooperator.1 The Civilian Conservation Corps built it in 1933, and the register describes a 46-foot Aermotor LX-25 tower with a 7-by-7-foot cab.1

The lookout was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on January 28, 1988, as part of a multiple-property listing of Southwestern forest fire lookouts.2,3 The National Historic Lookout Register took it on May 15, 1997, nominated by Dave Lorenz, the Arizona registrar.1

The Arizona lookout list shows the tower as standing.4 I could not find a visit report, a staffing record or a fire history for West Peak in the sources I was able to read, so its current use and condition are unknown.1 The nevadahiking.org listing advises checking current access before going, and I could not confirm any public visiting arrangement.5
