View from the cab
What the lookout saw from its cab: every ridge out to about 93 miles, the named peaks in sight, and other fire lookouts within view, worked out from terrain data in your browser.
This lookout is gone. The view is reconstructed from its recorded site and a typical height for a lookout like it.
Downloads about 3.2 MB of terrain data the first time.

Story
Researched 10 Oct 2026, fact-checked.
The Avenales site was a wartime post, not a fire tower in the usual sense.1 The Former Fire Lookout Sites register describes it as a standard Aircraft Warning Service post, with a ground cabin and a cupola, built in 1942 or 1943.1 The post had two jobs: spotting enemy aircraft and detecting fires.1
The Forest Service built, supplied and staffed the post, and the Army repaid the agency for its costs.1 Operators were to report aircraft activity, and every fire or smoke, to Forest Service dispatch, and the aircraft information was then passed on to the Army.1 The service behind the post was a civilian branch of the Army's Ground Observer Corps, and it was deactivated on May 29, 1944.2
The register gives the removal date as unknown.1 It records the site as registered on April 23, 2020, on the nomination of Brad Eells, under the number US 2042, CA 148.1 The Forest Fire Lookout Association's California list marks the site as gone.3
No source we read describes what, if anything, remains at the site today, or whether visitors can reach it.
