Baldy Mountain (Happy Camp Baldy) Lookout
Also known as Baldy Mountain
A 1938 BC-301 tower on Baldy Mountain above Happy Camp replaced a 1919 lookout house; a 1974 hire reportedly at this site, Kathy Shoopman, became a 48-year Klamath lookout before dying in the 2022 McKinney Fire.

Baldy Mountain (Happy Camp Baldy) Lookout
Baldy Mountain, also known as Happy Camp Baldy, overlooks the town of Happy Camp in the Klamath National Forest, and has carried a fire lookout in one form or another since the First World War. By mid-1916 the Forest Service had strung a telephone line up from Happy Camp to the mountain and posted a watchman, John Jackson, there that same year.1 Through the early 1920s a succession of named lookouts worked the peak, among them David Cuddihy, who resigned in 1917 after the altitude aggravated a heart condition, and Wilbur "Baldy Billy" Martin, who held the post for several seasons between 1917 and 1923.1 In 1919 the Forest Service built a proper "standard lookout house" on the mountain, about 14 feet square and 25 feet high; plans for it were announced that May, and a guard named Effman and lookout Martin were finishing the structure that October.1 Local papers followed the job closely enough to report that a Forest Service fire-patrol airplane once passed within thirty feet of the tower, on July 27, 1920.1
That 1919 lookout house is not the structure standing today. The current cab — a California Region 5 "Plan BC-301" on a 10-foot enclosed timber tower — was built in 1938, according to the National Historic Lookout Register, which lists the site as US 1352 / CA 175.2 It is administered by the Klamath National Forest, sits at an elevation of about 5,611 feet, and was formally added to the register on October 27, 2019, after nomination by Brad Eells.2
This lookout may also have launched a notable career. A 2022 news account says Kathy Shoopman started working in 1974 at the "Bald Mountain Lookout, west of Happy Camp" — the name given there is slightly different from this site's, but the location description matches, and it appears to be the start of nearly five decades watching for smoke across Klamath National Forest peaks. She later staffed Lake Mountain and the Buckhorn lookout, a post she had held since 1993, before she died when the McKinney Fire burned through her home community of Klamath River in August 2022.3
The register describes Baldy Mountain as currently unstaffed, and no source consulted here says when regular staffing ended.2 A handful of photographs submitted to the register — including informal shots from the Nancy Hood family collection showing an older "California Plan 4A cabin" and a "tree platform" once used on the mountain — hint at other structures that stood here between the 1919 house and the surviving 1938 tower, but none of the sources consulted date or explain them.2 Access to the tower itself is not documented in any source found for this story.
