View from the cab

What the lookout saw from its cab: every ridge out to about 93 miles, the named peaks in sight, and other fire lookouts within view, worked out from terrain data in your browser.

This lookout is gone. The view is reconstructed from its recorded site and its recorded height.

Downloads about 3.5 MB of terrain data the first time.

Or see what it could see on the map: the ground in its line of sight.

Story

Researched 9 Oct 2026, fact-checked.

Billy's Peak is in Trinity County, California, on the Shasta-Trinity National Forest.1 The Former Fire Lookout Sites register dates the lookout to 1934. It describes a California Region 5 Plan BC-301 cabin atop a 20-foot H-brace steel tower.1

Other sources do not match that date or that height. A 1952 survey description of the site, quoted on a hobby site, says the lookout house stood on a 30-foot steel tower.2 A June 1954 item from the Dunsmuir News, also quoted there, says a trail had been opened that week in preparation for a lookout going in on June 1.2 The register's 1934 date and these 1952 and 1954 items do not agree, and no source we read explains the difference.

The register says the tower came down in spring 1980 and that nothing is left at the site.1

SummitPost describes a trail that climbs to the summit where the lookout once stood. It gains just under 3,000 feet in 3 miles from a tight switchback on a Forest Service road, and it enters the Trinity Alps Wilderness less than half a mile in.3 That same guide warns that the trail has gone without upkeep for some time.3 A second SummitPost page, on the peak itself, describes a maintained route to the summit, so the two pages disagree on the trail's condition.4 No source we read says whether the trail is closed.
