Story

Researched 9 Oct 2026, fact-checked.

Blue Ridge Lookout stood about 15 miles east of Springville, with views toward the coastal range and over Yokohl Valley and Exeter.1 It was built in 1930 as an early cooperative lookout, jointly erected by the Forest Service and the California Department of Forestry (CDF).2 The open steel tower was an Aermotor Company product, about 60 feet tall, with a 7-by-7-foot observation cab.2 A residence followed in 1931 and a garage in 1932, and the cab was reworked in 1960.2

A 1991 note in the register describes the site as an intensively used communications site, with tremendous electromagnetic radiation at cab level.2 The sources do not say when routine fire watch ended, and they name no notable fires at this lookout.

CAL FIRE had planned to take the tower down until local lookout enthusiasts stepped in.3 In May 2010 it was lifted off its mountain after a four-year effort and taken to CAL FIRE headquarters in Visalia for full restoration.3 The restored tower went to the Tulare County Fairgrounds, where it opened to visitors during the county fair in October 2011.4

In 2024 the Buck Rock Foundation and CAL FIRE opened the lookout during the county fair, with Foundation representatives giving tours. Hundreds of visitors came over three days.5 Buck Rock describes it as a lookout taken out of service and now displayed at the fairgrounds.5 The Sun-Gazette reported in 2017 that it was on permanent display there.1 The register, however, says only the cabin is used in a ground-level display.2 The sources disagree on whether the full tower or just the cabin is shown today. No regular opening hours appear in them, so check with the fairgrounds before a visit.
