View from the cab

What the lookout saw from its cab: every ridge out to about 93 miles, the named peaks in sight, and other fire lookouts within view, worked out from terrain data in your browser.

This lookout is gone. The view is reconstructed from its recorded site and its recorded height.

Downloads about 3.5 MB of terrain data the first time.

Story

Researched 9 Oct 2026, fact-checked.

Castle Peak Lookout stood on Castle Peak in Madera County, California, within the Sierra National Forest.1 A September 1913 item in the Fresno Morning Republican, quoted on a lookout history page, places a lookout on 'Castle Peak or Oat Mountain,' a phrase that does not say whether the two names refer to one place.2

The register gives 1930 as the build year.1 It describes the tower as a California Region 5 Plan 4AR design, 20 feet tall, with an H-brace open steel frame.1 The 1913 item came seventeen years before that build date, and neither source says whether the 1930 tower replaced an earlier station.1,2

The register gives no removal date.1 It cites a 1986 survey by Thornton that raised the possibility the structure was moved to or from Oat Mountain, though it adds that no evidence supports this.1 The register describes six tower piers as the only remains on site.1 The site was registered on February 1, 2020.1
