View from the cab

What the lookout saw from its cab: every ridge out to about 93 miles, the named peaks in sight, and other fire lookouts within view, worked out from terrain data in your browser.

This lookout is gone. The view is reconstructed from its recorded site and its recorded height.

Downloads about 3.7 MB of terrain data the first time.

Or see what it could see on the map: the ground in its line of sight.

Story

Researched 9 Oct 2026, fact-checked.

The Former Fire Lookout Sites register says China Peak was completed in 1937 as a California Region 5 cabin on an enclosed timber tower, on the Klamath National Forest in Siskiyou County.1 West Lookouts gives a later date, 1939, when a Civilian Conservation Corps camp at Seiad finished the lookout.2 A 1952 survey-station description, reproduced on the same page, puts the station about six miles northeast of Happy Camp and calls the lookout a standard 14-foot square, about 25 feet high.2

A December 1928 item, also reprinted there, says airmail pilots regularly dropped papers and magazines to the observer at a China Mountain lookout.2 If that item describes this lookout, it predates the register's 1937 date.1,2 Mrs. George Souza worked the lookout for several summers in the early 1960s, based in Seiad Valley.2

The register says the lookout was sold off as surplus and taken apart in 1972.1 West Lookouts says it was bought at auction and removed, and that its parts were recycled into a nearby cabin.2

An OpenStreetMap entry still carries the name China Peak Lookout, but it gives no date and does not describe what is standing.3 No source read describes what remains at the site today, or whether visitors can reach it.
