View from the cab

What the lookout saw from its cab: every ridge out to about 93 miles, the named peaks in sight, and other fire lookouts within view, worked out from terrain data in your browser.

This lookout is gone. The view is reconstructed from its recorded site and a typical height for a lookout like it.

Downloads about 3.7 MB of terrain data the first time.

Story

Researched 9 Oct 2026, fact-checked.

Craggy Peak is in Siskiyou County, near Callahan, on the Klamath National Forest.1,2 The lookout site register puts the earliest possible build date at 1915.1 It describes a ground cabin with an odd window layout, which may follow a California Region 5 Plan 4A design.1

Records quoted on the Forest Lookouts page show the lookout already in place by June 1915, when a Shasta Forest supervisor was on his way to inspect it.2 That October, Mr. Corey and his wife were still at the lookout.2 He reported a fire near Granite Creek. A U.S. ranger and a state firewarden reached it quickly and extinguished it.2 In October 1921, a Mr. Friday was filling the fire warden post at the lookout station.2

The register gives the removal date as unknown.1 Only a foundation is left.1 We found no source that describes the site today, or says whether it is open to the public, so check with the Klamath National Forest before you go.
