View from the cab
What the lookout saw from its cab: every ridge out to about 93 miles, the named peaks in sight, and other fire lookouts within view, worked out from terrain data in your browser.
This lookout is gone. The view is reconstructed from its recorded site and its recorded height.

Story
Researched 9 Oct 2026, fact-checked.
Crystal Peak is in Sierra County, on the Tahoe National Forest.1 The site stands at 8,090 feet (2,466 m).1 The register describes a Region 5 Plan BC-301 cabin on a steel tower 20 feet high, with open X-bracing, and gives 1933 as the build year.1
In September 1938, a Nevada State Journal item quoted on the Forest Lookouts page said lookouts at Crystal Peak and Martis Peak had sighted a fire.2 Rangers searched for several days and could not find it.2 The source of the smoke stayed a mystery.2 A forest supervisor suggested that a lightning-struck tree might be giving off an occasional puff of smoke.2
In 1940 the same paper reported that L. E. Walker had been employed as lookout at Crystal Peak, and that he and his wife had returned to Folsom for the winter.2
Forest officials also closed the Crystal Peak road to public use.2 A November 1939 announcement covered the road from the old Dog Valley road to the lookout, and a later order ran from October 31, 1940 to June 1, 1941.2
The register gives no removal date.1 The Forest Fire Lookout Association's California list marks Crystal Peak as gone.3 We found no source that describes what, if anything, remains at the site today, or whether it is open to the public now, so check with the Tahoe National Forest before you go.
