Story

Researched 8 Oct 2026, fact-checked.

Dyer Mountain Lookout stands in the Lassen National Forest in Lassen County, California, at about 7,474 feet.1 The National Historic Lookout Register describes it as a California Region 5 Plan BC-301 cabin on a 15-foot enclosed timber tower.1

The register and Forest Lookouts both give 1934 as the build year.1,2 Forest Lookouts says a Conservation Corps crew erected it with lumber from the Red River Lumber Company, and that pack horses delivered the supplies to the site.2

High winds tore its west shutters off in June 1937.2 That September, a spark from a flatcar's brake shoe started a fire that destroyed a logging trestle over Dry Creek, and the Dyer Mountain lookout was the first to report it.2

Forest Lookouts quotes 1955 and 1956 notices naming John and Lillian Dulvick as summer staff.2

State funding ran short in the early 1990s.2 A 1992 Lassen County Times item, quoted by Forest Lookouts, said the cut came in the 1991-92 fiscal year and that "severity" funds had covered the 1991 season.2 The lookout opened on June 15, 1992, funded for two months.2 The sources do not give one end date for state support. An October 1996 item still called the lookout state funded,2 and the register quotes CAL FIRE's 2011-2012 plan as saying the permanent cut came about 15 years before that plan.1

The register says CAL FIRE used the tower as a lookout until 2007.1 When staffed, the register adds, it served the Almanor and Eagle Lake ranger districts and a Plumas National Forest district.1

Its lower room now houses state and federal radio equipment.1 CAL FIRE's 2011-2012 plan calls the building unsafe.1 Guy wires sagged on one side, stair boards were cracked and splintered, and the catwalk was separating from the main structure.1 The plan says the Forest Service had stopped regular maintenance and might pursue demolition rather than restoration.1 CAL FIRE also took the lookout off its list of historic buildings to preserve.1

The lookout joined the register on October 31, 2019, as US 1376.1 In 2020 the Forest Service proposed a new special use permit so CAL FIRE could install a 10-by-10-foot metal sea container at the Dyer Mountain Communications Site and move its radio equipment out of the lookout.3 The project page lists the decision as signed November 7, 2020, and the project as completed.3

The register's text dates from the 2011-2012 plan, so it may be out of date. The newest source I found is a 2020 Forest Service page.3 The register calls the building unsafe for use, so I would not advise climbing it. I found no source describing public visits.1
