View from the cab

What the lookout saw from its cab: every ridge out to about 93 miles, the named peaks in sight, and other fire lookouts within view, worked out from terrain data in your browser.

This lookout is gone. The view is reconstructed from its recorded site and its recorded height.

Downloads about 4.0 MB of terrain data the first time.

Or see what it could see on the map: the ground in its line of sight.

Story

Researched 9 Oct 2026, fact-checked.

The Kettenpom Peak lookout stood in Trinity County, within the Six Rivers National Forest.1 In December 1935 the Forest Service was hauling material to build it, and the Blue Lake Advocate reported a 14 x 14 frame building raised on steel, 20 feet above the ground.2 The register dates the lookout to 1936 and describes a cabin built to California Region 5 Plan BC-301, set on an open, 17-foot timber tower.1

The sources do not agree on the tower itself. A 1942 Coast and Geodetic Survey station description portrays it as a white timber structure on eight wooden legs, 30 feet tall.2 The register's 17-foot figure and the 1935 steel frame point elsewhere, so the height is unsettled.1,2

The register listed the lookout on October 29, 2019, before the fire.1 The lookout was destroyed in the August Complex fires of 2020.3,4 A Forest Fire Lookout Association chapter report says the Six Rivers tower was destroyed during those fires.3 A peakbagging page adds that the complex burned over one million acres from August to November 2020.4

A peakbagging page says the lookout is reached by road and trail.4 No source we read describes what, if anything, remains at the site now, or whether visitors can reach it. Check with the Six Rivers National Forest before planning a trip.
