View from the cab
What the lookout saw from its cab: every ridge out to about 93 miles, the named peaks in sight, and other fire lookouts within view, worked out from terrain data in your browser.
This lookout is gone. The view is reconstructed from its recorded site and a typical height for a lookout like it.
Downloads about 3.8 MB of terrain data the first time.

Story
Researched 9 Oct 2026, fact-checked.
The Kettle Rock lookout stood in Plumas County, California, inside the Plumas National Forest, and the U.S. Forest Service administered it.1 The first lookout structure went up in 1912.1,2 According to the Former Fire Lookout Sites register, a Plan 4AR building from California Region 5 took the original's place in 1923.1 A 1952 newspaper item instead says the first building was reconstructed in 1920, so the sources disagree on that date.2
The register dates the most recent building, a BC-1401 design from California Region 5, to 1953, when it sat on a nine-foot block tower.1 The 1952 item says the old structure had been dismantled and a new 14-by-14 building was under construction.2 A Peakbagging page gives 1952 for the largely concrete structure, so the sources do not fully agree on when it went up.3
Newspaper notices name people on duty at the station from 1922 to 1959.2 R.A. Thompson spent a summer there in 1922.2 Bert Terrell, also spelled Terrill, appears as the Plumas National Forest lookout in notices from the 1930s and early 1940s.2 In 1952 the Reno Evening Gazette named Mr. and Mrs. Frank G. Clark as that season's lookouts.2 Violet Hawson wrote from the station in 1958, and in July 1959 she gave up the post because her husband had fallen ill.2 The last notice we found, from that July, names Blanche Le Fluer on duty.2
A Peakbagging page has photos from 2001 and 2009 and says the lookout was in poor shape and looked abandoned.3 The register says vandalism was reported in 2012 and places the removal sometime between 2014 and 2017.1
According to the register, a repeater vault has taken over the site.1 No source we read describes anything else left on the summit, and none says whether the public can reach it.
