View from the cab

What the lookout saw from its cab: every ridge out to about 93 miles, the named peaks in sight, and other fire lookouts within view, worked out from terrain data in your browser.

This lookout is gone. The view is reconstructed from its recorded site and a typical height for a lookout like it.

Downloads about 3.6 MB of terrain data the first time.

Story

Researched 9 Oct 2026, fact-checked.

Lakeview Point sits at 3,774 feet in Siskiyou County, on land the Klamath National Forest administered.1 The register gives 1937 as the build year, but the same entry says the tower described in a 1986 survey was never built.1

A Klamath National Forest chronology, quoted on a lookout history site, records a May 13, 1939 announcement that a temporary lookout would be installed at Lakeview Point, west of the Copco road.2 The plan was to house it in a tent with radio contact.2

The register's only photo shows a small observation-only ground cabin that was reportedly built in 1954.1

The register says the Forest Service gave up the site in 1976 and sold the land.1

According to the register, a small gazebo built by the landowner stands at the site, and the lookout platform's remains lie nearby.1 Neither source says whether visitors may enter.1,2
