What the lookout saw from its cab: every ridge out to about 93 miles, the named peaks in sight, and other fire lookouts within view, worked out from terrain data in your browser.

This lookout is gone. The view is reconstructed from its recorded site and its recorded height.

Story

Researched 9 Oct 2026, fact-checked.

Mitchell Peak rises to 10,369 feet in Kings Canyon National Park, where a fire lookout was constructed in 1962.1 The National Park Service administered it.1 The Former Fire Lookout Sites register says the lookout appears to be an R-6 flat-top plan on a 10-foot steel open tower, but it does not know the site's earlier history.1

The register gives no removal date.1 A September 2006 Los Angeles Times column says the tower was pulled down in the 1970s, around the time airplanes and helicopters began replacing lonely fire lookouts.2

The only thing left of the tower is a concrete slab, set among boulders on the summit.2 The register also records a concrete slab dated 1962 at the site.1

The column describes a stiff 3.2-mile hike to the top, with a wide view of the central Sierra Nevada.2 It is the most recent account we found, so the route may not match conditions today.
