Story
Researched 8 Oct 2026, fact-checked.
Mount Bielawski Lookout stands on Castle Rock Ridge in the Santa Cruz Mountains, and the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection's Santa Clara Unit is listed as its administrator.1,2 The sources disagree on the county. The Register's location line says Santa Clara County, but its description places the station just inside Santa Cruz County.1 A 1957 newspaper item places the site on the boundary between the two counties.3 Wikipedia says the peak lies in both counties and is the highest point in Santa Cruz County.2
The state board of forestry built the tower in 1922.3 Three counties each put up $500 for materials, and the board supplied the labor.3 Press items give its height as 60 feet.3 The Register calls it the oldest Aermotor Company tower in California and says it was the first fire-detection structure paid for by the state.1,3 The press says Mr. and Mrs. Amos Smead provided the land on a ninety-nine-year arrangement at a dollar a year, described as rent.3
The first lookout named in the press was Almon E. Smead, though the same papers also call him A.E. Smead and Amos Smead.3 Fred Herring was the lookout by 1936, and a 1957 item says the station had run for 35 consecutive fire seasons.3
The cab was remodeled in 1955.1 The original dwelling came down in 1969, and the present residence was built in 1970.1 The Register notes that the tower was altered, and an inside stairway now replaces the old ladder.1 It was registered on October 26, 2019, as US 1343, CA 166.1
The sources do not say whether the public may go up to the lookout. Wikipedia notes that the summit is densely forested and gives no outlook.2 The Register describes a residence and communications equipment near the lookout,1 so anyone interested should check with Cal Fire before visiting.
