Access

Restricted access

Access is seasonal, gated or needs a permit. Check before you go. Sources disagree. CLUI says the peak is Forest Service land, closed to the public. A trip report says the logging owner asks visitors to request permission first; the road is open for the first 4.5 miles, then gated for the last 3.5.

View from the cab

What the lookout saw from its cab: every ridge out to about 93 miles, the named peaks in sight, and other fire lookouts within view, worked out from terrain data in your browser.

This lookout is gone. The view is reconstructed from its recorded site and a typical height for a lookout like it.

Downloads about 3.3 MB of terrain data the first time.

Or see what it could see on the map: the ground in its line of sight.

Story

Researched 10 Oct 2026, fact-checked.

Mount Pierce, sometimes called Pierce Mountain or Monument Peak, is the top of Monument Ridge in Humboldt County's Coast Range.1 The Humboldt Meridian, a survey reference line, was established in 1853, and its starting point is on the summit.1,2

The Fire Lookout Association's California list names a Mount Pierce AWS site in Humboldt County and marks it gone.3 Antennas, a geodetic marker and a plaque now occupy the summit.1 The iron-bar tower that once marked the summit is gone.1 No source we found ties the AWS entry to the antennas or the tower.3,1

Access is disputed.2,4 The Center for Land Use Interpretation says the summit is Forest Service ground, closed to the public, with a local telemetry site on it.2 A hiker's trip report, citing contact with the owner in September 2020, says a logging company owns the land and asks visitors to request permission first.4 The same report found the road open for the first 4.5 miles, then gated for the last 3.5 miles to the summit.4 Treat the summit as off limits unless the landowner or land manager gives permission.
