View from the cab

What the lookout saw from its cab: every ridge out to about 93 miles, the named peaks in sight, and other fire lookouts within view, worked out from terrain data in your browser.

This lookout is gone. The view is reconstructed from its recorded site and its recorded height.

Downloads about 3.2 MB of terrain data the first time.

Story

Researched 9 Oct 2026, fact-checked.

The Needles is a rocky outcrop in the Sequoia National Forest, in Tulare County, California.1,2 A newspaper report from 1937 described a Civilian Conservation Corps crew building a trail to it, and said a stairway would be needed to reach the top.3

The Register gives 1938 as the year the lookout was built.1 A Forest Service release reprinted on the Register page credits the Civilian Conservation Corps with building the tower in 1937-38.1 Fire-lookouts.org gives 1937.4 A June 1939 newspaper report says the new cabin had opened.3

The Register describes an L-4 cab with a catwalk.1 Fire-lookouts.org calls it a 14-by-14-foot C-3 style cab, so the sources differ on the design.4 A 1939 newspaper said the cabin was reached only by wooden stairs.3

Millard R. James was placed in charge when the cabin opened.3 In June 1972, a 270-acre fire started near the lookout. Marie Cox, who was stationed there, was ordered to evacuate, and she went back on duty when the fire changed course.3

The lookout was destroyed by fire on July 28, 2011.1,4 The Forest Service said it was a structure fire and that the cause was under investigation.1 One account on the California lookouts site says reports attribute the fire to an ember from the wood-burning stove.3 The staffer on duty got out before the building burned.1 Forest Road 21S05 and trail 32E22 were closed during the fire, along with the rock where the lookout stood.1

Crews removed hazardous materials from the site, and the clean-up was completed in October 2012.4 A Forest Service project lead submitted a proposal for the rebuild, and the Kern and Tulare Counties Resource Advisory Committee awarded part of the requested funding.4 The sources we read do not say whether a new cabin was built.

The Former Fire Lookout Sites Register lists the site as US 1846, CA 41, registered December 1, 2019.2

The sources do not describe what remains on the rock today or whether it is open to visitors. The 2011 closure was meant to last until the fire was contained and the area was safe, and the Forest Service promised more information.1
