View from the cab

What the lookout saw from its cab: every ridge out to about 93 miles, the named peaks in sight, and other fire lookouts within view, worked out from terrain data in your browser.

This lookout is gone. The view is reconstructed from its recorded site and a typical height for a lookout like it.

Downloads about 3.1 MB of terrain data the first time.

Or see what it could see on the map: the ground in its line of sight.

Story

Researched 9 Oct 2026, fact-checked.

Pony Peak was watched long before it had a cabin. The Former Fire Lookout Sites register says a phone line reached the peak by 1912, and a photo caption records a 1925 temporary site.1 A December 1924 notice called for new wire on the emergency line to Pony Peak Lookout, and a 1928 record describes it as a secondary lookout, manned in emergencies, though it says it should be a primary one.2

The first structure came in 1934, a Region 5 cabin on an enclosed timber tower, and a CCC crew completed it that year.1,2 The sources do not agree on what stood before then. The 1924 and 1928 notes call the peak a lookout, while the register says the 1934 cabin was the first structure.1,2

The register says the peak was staffed each year through 1940, again from 1955 to 1960, and used intermittently until 1970.1 In 1952 a road to the lookout was under construction.3

The register does not record when the cabin was removed, and it reports only a foundation at the site now.1 No source here describes the site beyond that foundation, or says whether the peak is open to visitors.
