View from the cab

What the lookout saw from its cab: every ridge out to about 93 miles, the named peaks in sight, and other fire lookouts within view, worked out from terrain data in your browser.

This lookout is gone. The view is reconstructed from its recorded site and its recorded height.

Downloads about 3.3 MB of terrain data the first time.

Story

Researched 9 Oct 2026, fact-checked.

Sheetiron Mountain rises to about 6,500 feet in the Mendocino National Forest, in Lake County.1,2 The register dates the lookout to about 1915, and its 1915 photograph comes from the Upper Lake Ranger District collection.1

The register describes a 7-by-7-foot observation cabin on a 70-foot open steel tower.1 A residence cabin was also built, and a BC-201 Fireman-Lookout cabin was added in 1935.1

A California Ranger item from August 1941, quoted on the Forest Lookouts site, describes the lookout's water supply. Spring water ran through a 500-foot pipe toward the lookout's kitchen, and a salvaged gas engine helped push it uphill into a 500-gallon storage tank. The item opens with Ranger John Monday.2

The register says only the foundation of the original cabin remains today.1 The Forest Fire Lookout Association's California list shows the tower as gone.3 None of the sources we read say whether the site is open to visitors or how to reach it.
