View from the cab

What the lookout saw from its cab: every ridge out to about 93 miles, the named peaks in sight, and other fire lookouts within view, worked out from terrain data in your browser.

This lookout is gone. The view is reconstructed from its recorded site and a typical height for a lookout like it.

Downloads about 3.0 MB of terrain data the first time.

Story

Researched 9 Oct 2026, fact-checked.

The Stateline Point lookout stood on a hill above Kings Beach, at the north end of Lake Tahoe on the California-Nevada border.1 The register calls it a California Region 5 Plan BC-301 ground cabin, and notes a further photo of a 20-foot enclosed timber tower.2 The register gives its build date only as the 1930s.2 A compilation of California lookouts dates a lookout cabin on the site to 1936.3

Newspaper items quoted in that compilation name some of the people who staffed the post.3 In August 1937 Lookout Fireman Johnny Nelson, then on Stateline Point, took in a fawn that a tourist had accidentally hit on the highway.3 The fawn, later named Duke, spent the winter at the Galena Creek ERA camp, where the workers decided it should be the camp's chief mascot.3 In July 1940, J. E. Cox, the Stateline lookout, helped put out a forest fire near Kings Beach.3 It was thought to have been caused by a carelessly tossed cigarette.3 In 1964 Harold (Doc) Thornton received a $150 cash award for superior performance as a Forest Service fire lookout, and the same compilation says he had served at the North Shore tower for the last two summers.3

The lookout was removed in 2002.2,3,4 A 2008 Marin Independent Journal walk said the station had stood for 70 years until 2002, and that cell phones and aircraft had made it unnecessary.1

Today the site is a short day-use hike with a south-facing view over the lake.4,5 The summit has restrooms, picnic tables and free telescopes, and nine new interpretive panels went up in 2025.4 A 2008 visitor found a rock platform in the old building's footprint.1 The route is an old paved forest road, about half a mile one way, that climbs from an iron pipe gate reached from Reservoir Drive and Lakeshore Avenue. The trailhead is in a residential area.4 Visitors should park clear of the gate and the driveways.4 There is no fee, and camping and overnight stays are not allowed.4

Sources disagree on the climb. The 2008 walk gives about 100 feet of gain, while the 2026 guide lists 335 to 400 feet.1,4
