View from the cab

What the lookout saw from its cab: every ridge out to about 93 miles, the named peaks in sight, and other fire lookouts within view, worked out from terrain data in your browser.

This lookout is gone. The view is reconstructed from its recorded site and a typical height for a lookout like it.

Downloads about 3.0 MB of terrain data the first time.

Or see what it could see on the map: the ground in its line of sight.

Story

Researched 9 Oct 2026, fact-checked.

West Big Pine Mountain is in Santa Barbara County, inside the Los Padres National Forest.1 The register dates the lookout to 1934, when a California Region 5 plan BC-301 cabin went up on an open timber tower 10 feet tall.2 In World War II a residence cabin for the Aircraft Warning System was added, so the tower could be manned round the clock.2

The register lists the lookout as a former site and says the removal date is unknown.2

A hiker who wrote about a walk up the peak in April 2018 found only a couple of footings and some scattered metal from the lookout.3 He thought the higher peak to the east was the one properly called West Big Pine Mountain, and called the lookout's own peak West Big Pine Lookout.3 Partway up, he noted an old road cut just above him, and thought a road may once have led up to the lookout's peak.3 The sources I read give no current access rules for the lookout site.2,3,1
