View from the cab

What the lookout saw from its cab: every ridge out to about 93 miles, the named peaks in sight, and other fire lookouts within view, worked out from terrain data in your browser.

This lookout is gone. The view is reconstructed from its recorded site and its recorded height.

Downloads about 3.0 MB of terrain data the first time.

Or see what it could see on the map: the ground in its line of sight.

Story

Researched 10 Oct 2026, fact-checked.

The Angeles National Forest put up West Libre Lookout in 1936.1 The cabin followed California Region 5 Plan BC-301 and sat on a 20-foot enclosed timber tower.1 A photo page on peakbagging.com shows the tower as it probably looked in the 1950s, and says the tower dates from 1936.2 The Angeles Adventures site gives the lookout's dates as 1936 to the 1960s.3

The register says Forest Service personnel purposely burned the tower in 1969.1 Peakbagging.com tells it differently: the tower was demolished at some point before 1980, and that page does not know when.2 Both accounts put the end before 1980, but they disagree on how it ended.1,2 The register's 1969 date and method are used here, with that disagreement noted.1,2

Peakbagging.com says nothing is left at the site now.2 The site lies at about 5,112 feet (1,558 metres) in Los Angeles County, but we found no source on whether visitors may go there.1
