Story

Researched 8 Oct 2026, fact-checked.

The Eddy Fire Tower stands on the John Bethea State Forest in Baker County, in northern Florida, and the Florida Forest Service owns it.1,2 The National Historic Lookout Register gives its model as an Aermotor LS-40, 100 feet tall, with a cab measuring 7 by 7 feet.1 Forest Lookouts calls it a steel tower.2

The tower was registered on August 8, 2013, as US 987, FL 4.1 The register gives the site elevation as 133 feet (41 meters).1

The sources read do not say when the tower was built, who staffed it, or whether it ever watched for a particular fire.1,2

The forest around it has had a hard time.3 The Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services says catastrophic wildfires have affected more than 80 percent of the property since the state acquired it.3 That statement does not mention the tower, so the sources do not say what happened to it in those fires.3

The sources do not say whether the public may visit or climb the tower today.1,2 The register describes it in the present tense, but none of the three sources gives a date for its most recent check.1,3
