Story

Researched 9 Oct 2026, fact-checked.

The Midway Fire Tower stands in Lafayette County, Florida.1 The National Historic Lookout Register's entry gives the structure as a 120-foot Aermotor LS-40, fitted with a standard cab and 18 landings, and puts its elevation at 64 feet.1 The sources I read do not give a build date or any early history.

The only later work the Register mentions is a 2016 refurbishment of the observer house, carried out by district personnel.1 Nothing I read describes who staffed the tower, what fires it watched, or whether it has ever been moved or closed.

The Register records the tower's registration on July 24, 2016, as US 1063, FL 10, with Robert Spear as nominator.1 It lists the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services as the administering agency.1

Its visiting status is also unknown from these sources. The Register does not mention public access or climbing rules, so check with the Florida Forest Service before planning a visit, and do not climb the tower without permission.
