Story
Researched 8 Oct 2026, fact-checked.
The Wadsworth tower stands along Route 1 in Palm Coast, Flagler County, Florida.1,2 It is a 100-foot Aeromotor LS40K fire tower with a side entry and catwalk.2 The register says the name honors the Wadsworth family, a prominent local family, and that the tower is sometimes also called Flagler, after the county, or Bunnell, after the nearby town.2
I could not find a construction date for this tower.2 A Weebly listing under the Flagler name says the Civilian Conservation Corps erected an 80-foot steel tower in 1938, and that the lookout was renamed Southside Tower in 1959.3 The 80-foot height disagrees with the register's 100 feet. The Jacksonville park page dates the Southside name to 1959 for a different tower, so the listing may mix up two towers.3,2,4
The name has caused confusion. The Florida chapter's report says the Jacksonville tower was once called the Flagler Tower, and that the Route One tower in Palm Coast also carries the Flagler name.1,4
The register says the tower is still used on occasion when wildfires are active, which suggests it is standing.2 The Weebly listing says its fire spotting duties ended in 1995, but that page has other details that do not match the register.3
I found no access rules in these sources, and the register lists no visit reports.2 The register lists the Florida Forest Service as a cooperator, so ask it before trying to visit or climb the tower.2
