Story

Researched 9 Oct 2026, fact-checked.

Black Mountain's fire tower stands in Union County, Georgia, inside the Chattahoochee National Forest.1,2 The U.S. Forest Service administers it, and the Blue Ridge Ranger District is listed as a cooperator.1

The Register says the tower was constructed in 1949 and describes a 13-by-13-foot live-in cab with a catwalk.1 Georgia ForestWatch also gives 1949 as the build year.2 A paper sign on the fence, reported on a hiker's history site, says the Civilian Conservation Corps built it in 1949. The Register names no builder, so this story does not repeat that claim.3,1

The same hiker's history site says the lookout first appears on a 1938 map. That may mean a lookout stood there before the 1949 tower, but the sources do not say what, if anything, the 1949 tower replaced.3

The Register lists the tower as registered on July 26, 2007.1 Its visit reports from 2014 and 2018 both say the tower is not staffed.1 The sources do not list any fires it watched.

The hiker's history site says the tower currently houses emergency communication equipment for Lumpkin and Union counties, and for groups including Camp F.D. Merrill, Blue Ridge EMC, Civil Air Patrol, the Forest Service and amateur radio.3 A Register visit report says it appears that radio repeater equipment is installed on the tower.1 The November 2018 visit report found the windows removed and boarded over and the cab door locked and padlocked, and said the tower appears structurally sound.1

Today the tower is locked and surrounded by a six-foot barbed wire fence, according to the hiker's history site.3 A 2014 visit report found the access road overgrown and steep, and said visitors would have to hike about a mile.1 The Appalachian Trail passes below the summit. According to the same site, the AT access detour is 0.4 mile with 400 feet of climb.3

Do not climb the tower. The sources do not say the public may go up it.1,3
