Story

Researched 8 Oct 2026, fact-checked.

According to the National Historic Lookout Register, the Lowndes County Fire Tower dates to 1937, and CCC workers helped build it.1 A newspaper item dated August 29, 1937, and credited to The Atlanta Constitution, reported that construction had begun on the county's first steel fire tower near Delmar, between Valdosta and Naylor.2

The Register describes a 100-foot steel Aermotor tower with a 7-by-7-foot cab. The Grand Bay Timber Protective Association backed the project.1,2

The sources do not name anyone who staffed the tower or any fire it watched. According to the Register, Georgia Forestry Commission staff swapped out the wooden steps in 2003, and outside contractors put in new windows and repainted the exterior in 2020.1

The Register lists the Georgia Forestry Commission as administrator.1 It records a registration on January 8, 2021, with Angela Kufrovich as nominator.1 The Register says that as of 2020 the tower was still in active use, owing to restricted airspace near Moody Air Force Base.1

The sources do not say whether the public can visit or climb the tower today, and the newest status note in them is from 2020. The Register gives the elevation as 218 feet, while a Georgia tower list gives 215 feet.1,3
