View from the cab

What the lookout saw from its cab: every ridge out to about 93 miles, the named peaks in sight, and other fire lookouts within view, worked out from terrain data in your browser.

This lookout is gone. The view is reconstructed from its recorded site and its recorded height.

Downloads about 4.3 MB of terrain data the first time.

Story

Researched 9 Oct 2026, fact-checked.

Antelope Mountain lookout stood in Bonner County, about two miles east of Clark Fork, on Kaniksu National Forest land.1,2 A log cabin went up around 1923, and a 30-foot pole tower with an L-4 cab came later, around 1936.1,2,3

Idaho Fire Lookouts has no staffing history on file for the site so far.4

The sources disagree about how the tower ended. The Former Fire Lookout Sites register says it was removed in 1964.1 Firelookout.com, Idaho Fire Lookouts and the Idaho Forest Lookouts page on Weebly all say it was destroyed that year.2,4,3

The register lists the site as registered on September 13, 2010, as US 628, ID 1, and gives its elevation as 4,392 feet (1,339 meters).1 Idaho Fire Lookouts gives 4932 feet, while the register and firelookout.com both give 4,392 feet.1,2,4

Idaho Fire Lookouts marks the site as a hike-in and abandoned.4 None of the four sources says what, if anything, is left on the ground today, so the record cannot say whether a cabin footing or tower base survives.1,2,4,3
