View from the cab

What the lookout saw from its cab: every ridge out to about 93 miles, the named peaks in sight, and other fire lookouts within view, worked out from terrain data in your browser.

This lookout is gone. The view is reconstructed from its recorded site and its recorded height.

Downloads about 4.1 MB of terrain data the first time.

Story

Researched 10 Oct 2026, fact-checked.

Archer Point Lookout was a 20-foot pole tower with an L-4 cab, about 14 miles south of Moose Creek Ranger Station, at 5,061 feet.1 A Forest Service list dates it to about 1933.2 The Forest Lookouts site gives 1934.3

The site was administered by the Bitterroot National Forest until 1956.3 In that year administration moved to the Nez Perce National Forest, according to the Forest Lookouts site.3 Firelookout.com and the Forest Service's Nez Perce list both place the site in Nez Perce.1,4

The lookout was destroyed in 1957.1,3,2,4

The Idaho Fire Lookouts site files the site as hike-in and destroyed.5 The Forest Service includes Archer Point in its list of Selway-Bitterroot Wilderness lookouts.2 No source we found describes what, if anything, remains at the site today.
