View from the cab

What the lookout saw from its cab: every ridge out to about 93 miles, the named peaks in sight, and other fire lookouts within view, worked out from terrain data in your browser.

This lookout is gone. The view is reconstructed from its recorded site and its recorded height.

Downloads about 3.8 MB of terrain data the first time.

Story

Researched 10 Oct 2026, fact-checked.

Armstrong Peak sits about 14 miles east of Elk River in Clearwater County, Idaho, at an elevation of 3,555 feet.1 The tower went up in 1934 as a 60-foot pole tower with an L-6 cab and a cabin.2 The Forest Lookouts site files it under the Clearwater-Potlatch Timber Protective Association.2

The association's 1953 annual report says the tower was completely rebuilt that year, and that other towers received minor repairs.2

The combined 1961–62 report says the tower had not been used for several years and was in poor condition, and that it was removed that autumn, once fire season was over.2 The same entry also mentions improved detection methods.2 Two other listings say instead that it was destroyed in 1962, so the sources disagree on whether it was taken down or destroyed.1,3

Idaho Fire Lookouts tags the site as drive-up.3 None of the sources we read describes what, if anything, remains on the peak today, or whether visitors may go there.
