View from the cab

What the lookout saw from its cab: every ridge out to about 93 miles, the named peaks in sight, and other fire lookouts within view, worked out from terrain data in your browser.

This lookout is gone. The view is reconstructed from its recorded site and its recorded height.

Story

Researched 10 Oct 2026, fact-checked.

Barren Hill is a patrol lookout site in the Nez Perce National Forest.1,2 Sources disagree on when it went up. Firelookout.com, Idaho Fire Lookouts and Forest Lookouts all describe a 40-foot patrol tower built around 1934.1,2,3 The Clearwater National Forest list instead records a 10-foot L-4 cabin.4 A 1981 history by Louis Hartig, quoted on Forest Lookouts, says the Selway National Forest built an L-4 cabin on a 10-foot log tower in 1931.3 Forest Lookouts says its own sources seem to conflict on the construction date and tower height.3

Three pages say the tower was abandoned in the 1940s.1,2,3 The Clearwater list says instead that it was last manned in the 1940s or 50s.4

The Idaho lookout list marks the tower as gone, and Forest Lookouts says it was removed.5,3 Idaho Fire Lookouts tags the site Hike-In.2 No source we read describes what, if anything, remains at the site today, or whether the spot is open to visitors.2,3,4
