View from the cab

What the lookout saw from its cab: every ridge out to about 93 miles, the named peaks in sight, and other fire lookouts within view, worked out from terrain data in your browser.

This lookout is gone. The view is reconstructed from its recorded site and its recorded height.

Downloads about 3.7 MB of terrain data the first time.

Story

Researched 10 Oct 2026, fact-checked.

The lookout on Battle Creek ridge stood about 12 miles northeast of the Moose Creek Ranger Station, in the Nez Perce National Forest. A Forest Service list calls the spot Battle Ridge.1,2,3

A camp was recorded here around 1928.1,2

Sources disagree on when the tower went up. Most give a 10-foot tower with an L-4 cab in 1932.1,2,3 Idaho Fire Lookouts dates the same cab to 1934.4 One page, citing an undated inventory of Moose Creek Ranger District lookouts, describes a 20-foot tower and a 1931 build.2

The tower was destroyed in 1951.1,4,2,3

In 1957 the site was transferred from the Bitterroot National Forest to the Nez Perce National Forest.2

Idaho Fire Lookouts lists the site as hike-in.4 No source we found describes what, if anything, remains on the ridge today.
