Story
Researched 10 Oct 2026, fact-checked.
Bear Creek Point Lookout is an L-5 cab in Valley County, Idaho, built in 1934.1,2,3 Three sources give its size as 10 by 10 feet.1,2,3 Forest Lookouts describes a two-story, 12-by-12 log cabin instead.4
The sources also disagree about the forest. The register places the site in the Salmon-Challis National Forest, while firelookout.com and Forest Lookouts say Salmon National Forest.1,2,4 Forest Lookouts also quotes a 1945 survey description of a "Bear Creek Pt." tower and cabin in the Nez Perce National Forest. That may describe a different point with the same name.4
Forest Lookouts quotes a July 12, 1951 Recorder-Herald item saying Charles L. Powell, Jr. of Kennewick, Washington, had taken over a "Bear Creek lookout." The item does not clearly name this site, so it may not be about this cab.4
The cab was abandoned in the 1950s.1,2,4,3 The National Historic Lookout Register listed it on November 20, 2008, as US 748, ID 50, on the nomination of Jill Osborn.1
Firelookout.com says the cab "is still there," but that page carries no date, so it is the most recent description we found of the cab's condition.2 The Forest Fire Lookout Association's Idaho list marks the lookout as standing.5
The register says the Forest Service administers the site and that it is reached only by trail, inside the River of No Return Wilderness.1 Firelookout.com calls it the Frank Church River of No Return Wilderness.2 The sources do not say whether visitors may go inside the cab, so check with the Forest Service before going.1
