View from the cab

What the lookout saw from its cab: every ridge out to about 93 miles, the named peaks in sight, and other fire lookouts within view, worked out from terrain data in your browser.

This lookout is gone. The view is reconstructed from its recorded site and its recorded height.

Downloads about 4.3 MB of terrain data the first time.

Or see what it could see on the map: the ground in its line of sight.

Story

Researched 9 Oct 2026, fact-checked.

Bear Creek was a fire lookout in northern Idaho.1 The Former Fire Lookout Sites register says a 20-foot pole tower of the L-4 type went up in 1934.2 Idaho Fire Lookouts and Rex's Fire Lookout Page give the same year and tower type.1,3

We found no staffing history. Idaho Fire Lookouts says it does not yet have a documented record of who staffed the tower, and it asks readers who know to get in touch.1

The tower ended about 1961.2 Three sites give that year as the date it was destroyed.4,1,3 The register says it was removed about that time, so the sources differ on whether it came down or was destroyed.2 Firelookout.com lists the agency as Priest Lake TPA/IDL.4

None of the sources we read describes the site today, so we cannot say what, if anything, remains on the ground. Idaho Fire Lookouts lists the site as hike-in.1 We found no rules about access, so check with the managing agency before going.
