View from the cab

What the lookout saw from its cab: every ridge out to about 93 miles, the named peaks in sight, and other fire lookouts within view, worked out from terrain data in your browser.

This lookout is gone. The view is reconstructed from its recorded site and a typical height for a lookout like it.

Downloads about 3.7 MB of terrain data the first time.

Story

Researched 10 Oct 2026, fact-checked.

The Bear Pete lookout was an L-4 cabin in the Payette National Forest, about 15 miles west of Warren.1,2 It carries the same name as Bear Pete Mountain, which rises to about 8,750 feet.3,4

A climbing guide says the mountain takes its name from Peter "Bear Pete" Brockenau, who earned the nickname from his many bear stories.4

The sources date the cab to around 1930.1,3,2 The lookout was destroyed in 1966.1,3,2

Most sources place the site in the Payette National Forest, but Idaho Fire Lookouts gives the Challis National Forest instead.1,3,2,4

A University of Idaho photograph titled Bear Pete Lookout is dated September 12, 1950.4,5

Idaho Fire Lookouts tags the site as a hike-in.3 The climbing guide says the summit is reached by trail.4

No source we read describes what, if anything, remains of the cabin today.1,3,2
