View from the cab

What the lookout saw from its cab: every ridge out to about 93 miles, the named peaks in sight, and other fire lookouts within view, worked out from terrain data in your browser.

This lookout is gone. The view is reconstructed from its recorded site and a typical height for a lookout like it.

Downloads about 4.1 MB of terrain data the first time.

Story

Researched 10 Oct 2026, fact-checked.

Beargrass Lookout stood in the Nez Perce National Forest, at an elevation of 5,910 feet.1,2

All three site pages give 1930, or about 1930, for an L-4 tower.1,2,3 According to a Forest Service guide to lookout styles, the L-4, also called an Aladdin, measured 14 by 14 feet and was supplied pre-cut.4

The Idaho Fire Lookouts page lists staff for 1922, including C.A. Talcott and Jess Upham, and cites a book titled Lochsa by Louis F. Harting.1 That date is eight years before the 1930 tower.1 The sources we read do not say what stood on the summit in 1922, and they do not name anyone who staffed the L-4 tower.

The tower was abandoned in 1950, and the three site pages agree on that year.1,2,3 The Forest Fire Lookout Association's list marks the tower as gone.5

The Idaho Fire Lookouts page carries a "Drive Up" tag. No source we read describes what, if anything, remains at the site, or whether the public can reach it now.1
