View from the cab

What the lookout saw from its cab: every ridge out to about 93 miles, the named peaks in sight, and other fire lookouts within view, worked out from terrain data in your browser.

This lookout is gone. The view is reconstructed from its recorded site and a typical height for a lookout like it.

Downloads about 4.4 MB of terrain data the first time.

Story

Researched 10 Oct 2026, fact-checked.

Bethlehem Mountain's lookout went up in 1937 on the Kaniksu National Forest in Boundary County, Idaho, eight miles southwest of Eastport.1 It was a 20-foot pole tower with an L-4 cab.1,2 Firelookout.com, however, places the tower on the southwest point of Tungston Mountain, a peak name that differs from the Bethlehem Mountain name used here.1

When most of the area's lookouts were built in the twenties and thirties, there was no road system like today's, and the peaks were reached by trail up from the valley floor.3

Firelookout.com and Idaho Fire Lookouts both say the tower was destroyed in the 1950s.1,2 The Forest Fire Lookout Association's list marks the site as gone.4

Idaho Fire Lookouts labels the site hike-in.2 No source describes what, if anything, remains there today, and none says whether the site is open to visitors.1,2
